Creative Craft Projects With Recycled Materials

Last Updated on February 25, 2022 By Sean O'Grady, MD Leave a Comment

Did you know that as much as 91 percent of plastic doesn’t get recycled? Even a lot of what you put into the recycling bin never actually gets reused due to the expensive process of recycling plastic. We have all heard of the phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, but a lot of us tend to focus on the last word. We could actually be doing a lot to prevent our waste from going into the recycling bin in the first place.

Sean O’Grady, MD is a family medicine specialist and advocate for health, fitness, and green initiatives. Our environment has a direct impact on our health. Before you throw something in the recycling bin, try using it in one of these fun craft projects.

  • Turn things into jewellery. You can use old buttons, cut up bits of plastic, even bottle caps to make fun jewellery.
  • Use old fabric to make stuffed animals, cleaning rags, costumes, or anything else you can think of. You can even use old socks to make puppets. Fast fashion is a major polluter, so keeping fabric out of landfills is crucial.
  • Turn plastic bottles into planters. You can paint them if you want to get really creative with it. Just cut off the top, make some holes in the bottom, and you are good to go!
  • You can also turn old bottles, cans, or milk jugs into organisers. This is a great tip if you or your kids have a lot of art supplies.
